Vietnamese language
Vietnamese (tieng Viet) refers to the Austroasiatic family of languages (vetmyongsky group). It is the native language of ethnic Kinh or Viet. It is spoken by 87 million people in Vietnam and about 5 million more in other countries (mainly, it’s expatriate Vietnamese).
Vietnamese took shape in the distant past of the people living in the Red River Delta. During the first millennium BC Vietnam was under Chinese rule and Vietnamese language was strongly influenced by Chinese language, as well as the culture of Vietnam. Two thirds of the words in Vietnamese are derived from the language of its northern neighbor. Classical Chinese was the official in writing and literary language in the end of the 19th century.
